Vijayawada: Mayor Koneru Sridhar, Municipal Commissioner G Veerapandian, Deputy Mayor G Ramana Rao, Chief Engineer M A Shukur, corporators and officials of various department of the VMC here on Saturday attended the live telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech to mark the first anniversary of the launching of the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation of Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme.
The officials and corporators viewed the speech of the Modi on a giant screen installed in the council hall.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi explained the objectives of the AMRUT. The scheme was inaugurated in 500 cities and towns, which have more than one lakh population.

The Central government has sanctioned AMRUT for Vijayawada with works worth Rs73.5 crore. The AMRUT scheme is aimed at improving the supply of drinking water, solid waste management, urban transportation and underground drainage. While the share of Central government is 33.33 per cent, the State government will bear 20 percent.

The VMC has to fund the remaining 46.66 per cent of the total project in AMRUT. Earlier, the VMC had passed a resolution for the implementation of AMRUT in the city.
