Kakinada: There are widespread allegations against Janmabhoomi committees of various municipal wards consisting of ruling TDP activists which indulge in irregularities in the selection of beneficiaries and in taking up construction of individual sanitary latrines (ISLs) under total sanitation programme as part of Central government’s Swachh Bharat.

The programme has been taken up on a massive scale in Kakinada city and its suburbs. A total 3,700 ISLs were sanctioned after identification of areas, including slums such as Parlova Peta, Dummula Peta, Kotha Kakinada and Recharla Peta.
Each of the identified households get Rs 15,000 for taking up the ISL under the Swachh Bharat and the funds are being provided directly to respective local bodies and from there to the beneficiaries.

BJP East Godavari unit president Yenimireddy Malkondayya alleged that a total 100 ISLs were sanctioned to Dummula Pata fishermen area and the local TDP Janmabhoomi committee sidetracked the entire construction activity.

The modus operandi is to show the old constructions as new ones with linking of Aadhaar and bank account to it,” he pointed out. The BJP leader demanded comprehensive probe into the issue and also action against the guilty as Rs 15 lakh fund was misused.

CPM East Godavari unit secretary Duvva Seshu Babji said that there were many more households without ISLs in Drivers Colony, Mahalashmi Nagar , Mutta Nagar and other areas in Kakinada city limits. The scheme should be extended to these areas also. He found fault with authorities for taking the Janmabhoomi committees into confidence, there by neglecting interests of common man.

CPI East Godavari unit president Tatipaka Madhu observed that the Janmabhoomi committees should stop playing big brother role in the selection process of beneficiaries.

Their role in selection of beneficiaries in Kotha Kakinada, Recharla Peta, Parlova Peta and other areas should be probed thoroughly. Instead of selecting bogus beneficiaries, the real and needy should be extended the help for fulfilling the Swachch Bharat goal, the veteran CPI leader felt.

When contacted, Kakinada Municipal Corporation Commissioner S Alim Basha denied any irregularities in selecting the beneficiaries. “Till Monday, we referred 3,300 units out of the total 3,700. Out of this, only one unit in Dummula Peta was not referred properly due to oversight. Except this, there are no anomalies in selection of beneficiaries,” the official clarified.
