Tirupati: The tourism department has chalked out a plan with Rs 25 crore for the development of infrastructure in tourist and pilgrim centres in Chittoor district under the Central government funded scheme `Swadesi Darshan’.

The plan includes various proposals covering Tirupati, Gudimallam, Kanipakam, historic Chandragiri Fort, Horsley Hills, Talakona and Kailasakona waterfalls.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Sunday, district tourism information officer D V Chandramouli Reddy said that the APITCO (Andhra Pradesh Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation Limited) has been entrusted to prepare the detailed project report for submitting to the Centre through the State government for the approval to take up the works for improving facilities like accommodation, water, toilets, transport and also construction of an Integrated Information Centre for the convenience of the tourists in Tirupati.

Reddy said that under the plan, the tourism department is making renewed efforts to provide basic facilities in Gudimallam where the ancient and unique Parasurameswara temple was located. Despite best efforts, the department all these years was unable to get the required land for providing basic amenities like shelter and toilet facilities near the temple for the tourists.

Steps are being taken to acquire lands for providing facilities with Rs 1.03 crore, including a play area for children and spacious hall for the tourists, coming from far off places to see the oldest Siva temple in Gudimallam. He admitted that lack of basic facilities hindering the department in attracting more tourists to the temple though it is only 10 km from Renigunta and connected well with road, rail and air link.

Major works in the plan to be taken up under Rayalaseema Religious and Heritage Tourism Development programme are the construction of Paryataka Bhavan in Tirupati to house the Information Centre of other States, apart from that state-of-the-art State Tourism Information Centre will be constructed with Rs 5 crore in the same budiling. The existing Village Museum, which is located at Shilparamam in Tirupati, will be developed, while accommodation in Kanipakam, Talakona, Kailasa Kona (both waterfalls) and Horsley Hills will be included in the Rs 25 crore plan, he said.

He said in Chandragiri where a palace and a fort were built by Vijayanagara kings was located, the department has proposed to have a direct link road from Tirupati-Chittoor highway to have more visibility of the palace to attract more tourists.
