Vijayawada: The State government would go for plantation of 1 crore saplings on July 29, said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.Speaking to media persons, here on Wednesday, Naidu appealed to the people, elected representatives, members of self-help groups, non-governmental organisations, government organisations, public and private institutions to join the “Mission Haritha Andhra Pradesh”.

The aim is to increase the green cover to 50 per cent by 2029 and this requires the support of the people of all sections,” he added.

The Chief Minister said that the government proposes to introduce “Vanam – Manam” programme under the Mission Haritha Andhra Pradesh. This would promote plantation in 4 lakh acres every year.

The government would appoint senior IFS and IAS officers to monitor the programme at every district, apart from constituting committees at district level with in-charge Minister as chairman and district Collector as convener. These committees would create awareness among people to promote green cover, he said.

He also proposed to start “Tree Bank” and mulled over drafting laws to prevent cutting trees. He wanted the government to adopt latest technology to shift the trees if required, for road widening. He had asked the officials to prepare proposals and also take suggestions from the people on promoting green cover.

He said that the government also proposes to give certain extent of forest lands to the Vana Samrakshana Samithis (VSS) and the Self Help Groups (SHGs) to promote green cover.

They would be given 100 wage days per year to plant and grow nurseries and trees in the forest lands. The programme would also be linked with the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS), he said.

Naidu said he would consider giving awards to people promoting green cover, consider incentives for employees and additional marks for students. He said the plantation was a must for every citizen to protect the environment and increase oxygen availability.
