Vijayawada: CPM State secretary P Madhu has lashed out at the State government for not preparing an action plan to tackle prevailing dry spell conditions in the State. He expressed concern over the drying up of crops in various parts of the State.

Addressing media conference at State party office here on Friday, the CPM leader said despite the State facing drought conditions for the second consecutive year, the government has not taken any measures to tackle the problem. He alleged that the State government has been ignoring the plight of farmers in the State.

The CPM leader said 11 districts in the State recorded deficit rainfall this year and expressed concern that groundnut crop in two lakh acres in Anantapur district is drying up due to lack of rains and water supply. He said the crop cultivation area in Nargarjuna Sagar Right Canal ayacut region has dropped to 25 per cent and KC Canal ayacut area to 10 per cent this season.

Referring to Krishna and Godavari Delta region, he said cultivation is being taken up in three lakh acres against 13 lakh acres crop area in three districts due to lack of irrigation water supply as well as poor rainfall.

The CPM leader said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s announcement of conducting Varuna Yagam for copious rains is not the right solution for tackling drought conditions in the State.

He reminded that the State government had spent only Rs 14 crore against Rs 700 crore allotted by the Central government for the development of seven backward districts in north coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema. He alleged that the State government has no intention to develop backward areas.

The CPM leader took objection to the announcement made by the State government that Assembly proceedings will be conducted only for five days and demanded that the government conduct proceedings at least 20 days to discuss people’s problems.

He criticised the government machinery for ignoring people’s problems and giving priority to publicity of government programmes. He informed that a large number of farmers living in north Andhra and Rayalaseema have migrated to Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal etc. for livelihood.
