Vijayawada: The demand for Special Category Status (SCS) is generating more heat across the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday. The late night announcement of a special package on Wednesday by Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley disappointed the people and they have come on to roads demanding that the Centre honour its commitment of special category status.

The SCS has pierced deep into the hearts of the people as they believe that more industries would come to the state for the incentives offered by the government and that would generate more employment opportunities.

Interestingly, this was the view given by most of the political parties, including the ruling party, at the time of bifurcation, during the elections and the last two years. Majority of the people are of the opinion that they have lost the employment opportunities in Hyderabad because of the bifurcation and the SCS would give them back their lost opportunities in the new state.

Now, with the Center going back on the promise, people feel that they are betrayed and the package would not bring employment opportunities for them.

Students and youth were seen in large numbers at every protest held on Thursday in the state and they claim that SCS is the only option for them to get employment. The Thursday’s protest, called by the Congress party, the YSRCP, left-wing parties and Pratyeka Hoda Sadhana Samithi had total support from cross section of the people.

People joined protests voluntarily expressing their displeasure over the package offered to them by the Centre.Interestingly, the support for the proposed September 10 state bandh was overwhelming, with students and youth backing it, besides representatives of various trade and commerce organisations.

Students Federation of India (SFI) state secretary Noor Mohammad said that both the BJP and the TDP have promised employment for all and stipend for unemployed youth during the elections. “They have promised job for every family. Where is it? How is it possible without industries coming in,” he asked.

All-India Students Federation (AISF) State secretary J Viswanath said that the students and youth were expecting nothing less than SCS that would bring new industries.
