Hyderabad: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu made it clear that his government was not willing to confront the Centre on the issue of Special Category Status (SCS) to the State.

Responding to a question by Chandrasekhar Rao CP, whether the government would reject the special package or whether it had given up its demand for SCS, Naidu shot back saying, “Give me one reason why I should reject it.” He said being in government, he has to take decisions based on ground realities.

“The State is in crisis and needs hand holding from Centre. Hence, it would not be practical to reject the special package offered by the Centre,” Naidu quipped.

The Chief Minister said the economic package announced by the Centre would provide around Rs 20,000 crore for Polavaram project and this would help in completing the project by 2018.

Challenging the Congress, Left and YSRCP and those alleging that he had compromised on the interests of the State, he said parties may have political agendas and have freedom to express and even to make allegations against him, but nothing will deter him from acting on the basis of practical considerations in the best interest of the people.

Refuting claims of the Opposition parties that the State would get only about Rs 60,000 crore per year, besides exemptions from income tax, industrial incentives and others, he demanded to explain how they had arrived at that figure. If that was true, he was ready to take on the Centre.

He asked them to go through the reports of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and other agencies to know what has happened in case of Himachal Pradesh from the time it was accorded SCS. He also explained at length the steps his government had taken with regard to debt redemption and other welfare measures.

Accusing the YRCP of creating lawlessness and chaos in Assembly for last three days over the SCS, he said despite several hurdles created in the way of State government’s initiatives, steps have been taken for the development of the State.
