Visakhapatnam: Taking advantage of the leadership crisis that is crippling outlawed CPI (Maoists) and decrease in the cadre strength of outfit, Vizag rural police are trying to gain the support and sympathy from the local tribals by adopting multi-pronged strategy.

Community policing, health camps and taking the students on tour to city are some of the immediate steps the police have taken up to maintain comfortable relationship with the villages at the ground level.

Sources said the police have launched some indirect action plan to strain the relations between the Adivasis and the Maoists. The recent appearance of pamphlets and posters in the name of Adivasi Vidyarthi Sangham warning the Maoists, said to be handiwork of the police, could be one such plan.

Interacting with few media personnel here on Monday, Superintendent of Police (Visakha Rural) Rahul Dev Sharma said the death of Maoist top leaders VRL Gopal alias Azad and Kudumula Venkata Rao alias Ravi of Andhra Odisha Border Special Zonal Committee (AOBSZC) was a major setback to the Maoist leadership.

The SP realised that the tribals are being deprived of basic needs of their lives in the interior areas in spite of the best of the government efforts and they have been demanding road-transport, purified water, medical facilities and schools. “We are trying to co-ordinate with various departments to fulfill the basic requirements of the locals. The presence of police in the interior parts as part of community policing and development will keep the villages off from the Maoists,” Sharma said.

The SP said the Maoists are active at Galikonda area and also cut-off areas in Vizag region and trying to regroup in Andhra Odisha Border (AOB) and few parts of Odisha.

On the proposed BSF Battalion deployment in Vizag Agency, the SP said he was yet to get concrete information on the exact date of the deployment but hopeful that BSF battalion will join in anti-Maoist operations soon, he said.
