Eluru: West Godavari district will be declared an open defecation free (ODF) district in December this year, according to Mullapudi Bapiraju, ZP Chairman. He was presiding over the general body meeting of Zilla Parishad held at ZP Meeting hall here on Tuesday.
Addressing the meeting the ZP Chairman said that under the sanitation programme, about 1.71 lakh individual toilets have been sanctioned to the district and added that the construction of one lakh toilets was already completed. He directed the village secretaries to take up steps to complete the remaining 71,000 toilets in the villages before December.
He stated that if the government declared the district as ODF, no individual toilet will be sanctioned to the villages. He stated that if any application is received from any villages for the construction of toilet after the announcement, the village secretaries concerned would be losing their jobs.
The ZP Chairman suggested the agriculture officials to encourage farmers to take up organic cultivation, as the government is ready to sanction subsidies for organic farming. He stated that the officials can select five model and progressive farmers from mandal-level to take up organic farming. He added that the government will sanction subsidy to purchase GIRI variety cows and organic fertiliser like Jeevamrutham. He said that about 20 seed cooperative societies have established in the district to make farmers self-sufficient in seed production.
