Kakinada: Senior BJP leader and MLC , Somu Veerraju alleged large-scale corruption in Women and Child Welfare Department activities and exploitation of poor in the form of excess rates for liquor above MRP in East Godavari district and across the State. Addressing the media persons at R&B guest house, here on Thursday, BJP leader said that the food items being supplied through Anganwadi centres to kids and pregnant women were found substandard in quality.

The MLC said that during his visit to different centres he found that the size of the egg very small and even its weight of 20 grams, against the normal size of 40 to 45 grams.

For these tiny eggs, the authorities are paying Rs 4. 70 whereas, bigger eggs are sold at Rs 4.25 to Rs 4.50 each in the open market, he said There are 55,000 Anganwadi centres in the State in 175 Assembly segments and one can assess the quantum of misuse at State-level as the average spending per year is Rs 4 crore for one Assembly segment the MLC said.

With regards to the sale of liquor the MLC observed that the poor are being exploited by charging excess of Rs 20 to 30 on each bottle by liquor syndicates. The MLC said that he brought these issues to the notice of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu as well as with officials’ concerned.

The MLC along with BJP district unit president Y Malakondayya and district unit president P Ravi Kiran visited a local wine shop at Bhanugudi centre on Thursday and enquired about the price tag in the shop.
