Kakinada: Customs Commissioner S K Rehman on Wednesday said that in view of sharp rise in annual revenue, the Kakinada Customs House under Joint Commissioner will soon be upgraded as Commissionerate to suit to the needs.

Speaking at the ‘Ease of Doing Business ‘interactive session organised by Cocanada Chamber of Commerce for shippers and traders at Kakinada Customs House here, Rehman revealed that during the financial year of 2015- 16 the Kakinada Customs Office earned Rs 1,208 crore and in order to increase it to Rs 2,000 crore in next few years and to cater to the changing needs, the office under Joint Commissioner cadre is being upgraded as full pledged Commissionerate.

Rehman interacted with the representatives of shippers and traders on issues which have been hampering the smooth conduct of their transactions at Kakinada.

The Commissioner gave clarity on issues that were brought to his notice. He also said that the more staff would be appointed after the Commissionerate forms.

Rehman, later declared open scanning centre at Jawahar Jetty and inspected the site for construction of Commissionerate.

State Port Director V Prasanna Venkatesh who also participated in the meet, stressed on various measures to develop all the 14 minor ports in the State under Sagar Mala with active association of both the Union and State governments. He asked Cocanada Chamber of Commerce to settle some issues that have been raised by labor unions associated with port operations.

Kakinada Customs Joint Commissionaire S Narasimha Reddy, NFCL CEO A S Rao, Cocanada Chamber of Commerce President Dantu Surya Rao and representatives of shippers and traders attended the meet.
