Tirupati: It is the light at the end of the tunnel as far as the Nagari people are concerned. They are more than elated with the government issuing a special GO reducing 30 per cent of property tax on revised tax. It gives a big solace especially to the weaving community. It will be implemented with retrospective effect from 1 April 2006. It may be noted that Nagari people were demanding to reduce the house tax for the last 10 years.

Highlights:

  • Congress government had increased the tax by 150 per cent in Nagari municipality in 2006
  • Residents of Nagari had been demanding reduction in the house tax for the last 10 years

The Nagari municipality was established in 2005 by merging the surrounding 11 gram panchayats into it. The then Congress government divided Nagari municipality into four zones and fixed the property tax increasing it by 150 per cent in 2006. Strongly condemning this decision, the people of 11 gram panchayats formed an association and started an agitation and stopped paying the property tax. The government threatened them with stoppage of water supply, sanitation programmes, issuing of various certificates etc. But people stood by their decision and fought for the cause.

The then MLA Gali Muddukrishnama Naidu’s efforts to restore the basic amenities to the people went in vain. Since TDP government came to power in 2014, he made fresh attempts which yielded results. The TDP leader in the Nagari municipality Paka Raja also wrote to the government in this regard. The government issued a GO on May 2, stated that out of 10,239 assessments in Nagari municipality, 3604 assessments pertains to residential category of powerloom community and 1520 pertains to non- residential category of powerloom community.

Since nearly 50 per cent of the assessments pertains to powerloom community some concessions were given. Accordingly, 50 per cent of the property tax was written off which was accumulated from 1 April 2006 to 31 March 2016 as a special case only for weaving community. The property tax is waived off completely in respect of the buildings wherein defunct powerlooms are in existence from 1 April 2016 onwards. It also waived off the interest rate with effect from 1 April 2006 till date as a special concession in the interest of weaving community. MLC G Muddukrishnama Naidu said, as the weaving industry was hit very badly, he tried to get some relief for them and the present GO is a result of his efforts.
