The state government allotted 200 acres to the prestigious educational institution IIIT Srikakulam at SM Puram under Etcherla Assembly constituency in the district represented by minister for energy Kimidi Kala Venkata Rao. A GO to this effect is expected to be issued soon after proposals are received from the district collector as the state Cabinet had given its nod for land allotment.

Srikakulam: The state government allotted 200 acres to the prestigious educational institution IIIT Srikakulam at SM Puram under Etcherla Assembly constituency in the district represented by minister for energy Kimidi Kala Venkata Rao. A GO to this effect is expected to be issued soon after proposals are received from the district collector as the state Cabinet had given its nod for land allotment.

  • First year classes to be held from Aug 1

  • Currently students are being accommodated in Nuzvid IIIT

IIIT Srikakulam was established in 2016-17 academic year and 1,000 students were admitted last year. They are being provided accommodation at Nuzvid IIIT and only administrative office is being maintained at 21st century Gurukulam buildings here. With allotment of land, IIIT officials have started efforts to conduct classes here from August 1 this year.
At present, Gurukulam buildings are sufficient to run classes for 600 students and the remaining 400 students would be accommodated in two nearby private engineering colleges on rental basis.

Classes for 1,000 students of second year will be continued at Nuzvid and freshly admitted first year students would be taught in classes here from the current academic year.IIIT is an integrated six years engineering course, which includes Intermediate education after Class X. For all the six years, the total student strength will be 6,000. At present notification has been issued for second batch.

For effective running of IIIT, total of 36 types facilities have to be provided like classrooms, administration buildings, separate hostels for boys and girls, staff quarters, including vice-chancellor, director residences, library, laboratory, etc.,
Etcherla MLA and minister for energy Kimidi Kala Venkata Rao told The Hans India, “IIIT is a prestigious institution and a boon to the students of Srikakulam and other districts.

This is the fourth IIIT in our state after Idupulapaya, Nuzvid, Ongole and we are committed to its development as quickly as possible.” Srikakulam IIIT director Prof Pappala Appala Naidu said, “We have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with AP Education Welfare Infrastructure Development Corporation (APEWIDC) for construction of buildings and other facilities. The entire project will be completed in the next five years.”
