Decline in traffic violation cases on Kadapa-Renigunta highway
The urban district police have been dealing toughly with traffic violators on the national highways as well on the city roads. In the last five months, police filed more than 25,668 cases and enforced traffic rules on a priority basis on the directions from the Director General of Police (DGP).

However, during the last five months, reports showed that the traffic violation cases are decreasing on the national highways like Kadapa-Renigunta (demo corridor) and at the same time, rising on the city roads, showing mixed results.
According to AP crime census, more than 8,500 people were killed in road accidents across the state when compared to the previous year. It may be recalled that urban police had registered more than 1,500 road mishaps cases in 2016.
From January to May 31 2017, in the span of six months, urban police have booked cases against traffic rule violators under the IPC section 279 on the Kadapa- Renigunta highway, 20 km stretch. Here, the department has deputed one Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and two Circle Inspectors (CIs) to keep a tab on the vehicles plying on the Kadapa-Renigunta highway round-the-clock.
On this highway, the police registered 499 cases and collected a penal amount of Rs 4.8 lakh in the month of January 2017. At the same time, the cases registered in May were 77 and penalty amount collected was only Rs 30,400. Thus, traffic violations have been drastically reduced.
Similarly, police have registered 23,125 cases of traffic rules violation across the urban district during the last five months and collected a penal amount of Rs 72.17 lakh. The increase in traffic rule violations is a major cause of concern.
In the month of January, total traffic rules violation cases registered across the district was 2,425 and the penal amount collected was Rs 6.40 lakh. Meanwhile, this number rose to 6,426 cases in May month and collected penalty amount from violators was Rs 17.61 lakh. Speaking to The Hans India, Tirupati Urban District SP R Jayalakshmi said that the police have been taking all necessary steps to curb the traffic rule violations.
“Our first priority is to reduce the deaths of people in road accidents. After Yerpedu mishap, the government has taken a decision to install 200 CCTV cameras on Srikalahasti-Tirupati highway. It helps us to study how the accidents occur on the highways,” SP added.
The SP said that that they would persuade the public through counselling to wear helmets while driving two-wheelers and put on seat belts as a safety measure while driving cars. They were also implementing face wash programme for drivers to prevent them falling asleep at the wheel and curbing accidents on highways during midnights, she added.
