Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation began plantation drive in the city on Saturday to mark the Vanam-Manam programme launched by the government in the state to increase greenery.

As a part of the state-wide event, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Commissioner J Nivas inaugurated Vanam – Manam programme by planting saplings at C R Marg popularly known as TTD Kalyana Mandapam Road near Mahatma Gandhi (MG) Road in the city on Saturday.

VMC Commissioner Nivas and 21st division corporator N Bala Swamy, horticulture assistant director Pradeep Kumar and others planted saplings.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner Nivas said that VMC planted about 2,000 saplings at all municipal schools, government offices, canal bunds and other important areas. With the greenery, temperature would decrease, he said. Main road dividers, traffic junctions and other areas are suitable for plantation, he added.

He further stated that officers should take action for planting 30 saplings in each division to save the city from pollution. By planting saplings and protecting trees, city would be converted into pollution free, he felt. He called up on citizens to take part in the Vanam – Manam programme.

Commissioner visited Budameru Bridge, Raghavendra theatre Road, CK Reddy Road, GS Raju road and inspected sanitation conditions. VMC superintending engineer (projects) JV Rama Krishna, executive engineer Srinivas, DEE Narayana Murthy and others accompanied.
