Maredumilli (East Godavari): Tribals should lead a healthy life leaving superstitions and witchcrafts and the State government is taking measures for the development and welfare of tribals, Assembly Speaker Kodela Siva Prasada Rao said here on Monday.

He visited Vetukuru and Kutravada villages in Maredumilli mandal in East Godavari district on Monday and inquired about the health, sanitation, education and welfare of local people in the Agency area.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kodela said that diseases like malaria surface in the rainy season in the Agency area and stressed the need to prevent recurrence of incidents which recently took place in Chaparai where 16 tribals died due to
consumption of contaminated food.

He claimed that the government was spending large amounts to prevent spread of diseases in the Agency area. He said living standards of tribals should be enhanced by providing basic amenities in remote areas.

He said the government is conducting a study to find out health concerns in the Agency area and take measures to address the problems. The government is ready to supply more mosquito nets to the tribal areas.

He called upon tribals to immediately inform the officials whenever health problems arise in the area. He cautioned the tribals not to consume contaminated food and water and added that pucca houses will be constructed in two to three years in the Agency area. He called upon tribals to make use of Anganwadi centres to get nutritious food for pregnant women and children.

AP Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Reddi Subrahmanyam, East Godavari District Collector Karthikeya Misra, ITDA PO A S Dinesh Kumar and ASP Adnan Nayeem Asmi were present on the occasion.
