For instance, the cost of a kg of tomatoes in the open market was Rs 11 in March and April this year and it has been increased to Rs 41 now.

The cost of green chillies also increased from Rs 30 to Rs 50 in a span of three months for per kg. Price of angular gourds also enhanced from Rs 20 to Rs 29 when compared to previous three months. Prices of cabbage and gherkins also soured to Rs 8 during the last three months from Rs 10 to Rs 18. Capsicum price increased from Rs 30 to Rs 54 when compared to summer season and price for french beans also increased from Rs 40 to Rs 52 during three months.

The departments of agricultural marketing, commercial taxes, civil supplies, horticulture, agriculture, consumer forums, traders unions need to review prices of vegetables every week through coordination, but it is not happening here. As a result, prices of all vegetables are soaring.

The district-level price regulation committees under official control of the District Collector and the Joint Collector need to maintain a strict vigil on market conditions by conducting timely reviews. but it is not happening.

After the transfer of district supply officer (DSO) V Subrahmanyam, PMC meetings were not held for the past four months to review on price situation as in-charge DSOs are not taking the initiation.

“Normally, vegetable prices come down from August onwards with increase of its production gradually”, assistant director of the agricultural marketing department YV Shyam Kumar told The Hans India here on Sunday.

“Prices of all the above vegetables are little bit low at Rythu Bazar here up to Rs 2 for per kg,” estate officer of Rythu Bazar D Lakshmana Rao said.
