Vijayawada: Dacoits armed with guns and knives stormed into a jewellery shop and looted goldsmith of valuables worth Rs 1 crore at busy Gopalareddy Road in Governorpet in the city on Tuesday night. The dacoity created a sensation.

The dacoits injured shop owner Munna Sankar with knife, when he tried to chase them. About 10 members of the armed gang left in a car, which was later traced by the police to Chilakaluripet in Guntur district.

The dacoits managed to give a slip to police who tried to catch them. According to complainant Sankar, at around 9.30 pm, the gang members entered the shop and scared them with guns and knives. They opened safe and emptied it into their bags. Gold bars, jewellery, coins and Rs 2.5 lakh in cash were looted.

They forced Sankar and his brother to relieve of their 30 gm gold chains. The dacoits also snatched cell phones of workers and left in the car. Sankar said the miscreants looted five kg gold. Dr Gajarao Bhupal DCP (Law and Order) told The Hans India that the police recovered the car used by the gang. The faces of the gang had been identified.

When asked about the possibility of gang hailing from neighbouring States, he said there was every chance of dacoity being handiwork of inter-state gang, going by modus operandi.
