Ongole: The state government is making all efforts to open Anna Canteens in all municipalities by September first week. The municipal commissioners who visited the Amma Canteens in Chennai and Annapurna Canteens at Hyderabad have submitted their report to the chief minister. The Chief Minister, who wants to open Anna Canteens in all towns and mandal headquarters on October 2, is about to take the final decision soon on the subsidy and number of Anna Canteens per one lakh population.

The state government has announced the setting up of Anna Canteen long ago but the finalisation of the menu, agencies and financial elements like subsidy were pending since then. In the meantime, the Telangana government introduced budget canteens in Hyderabad and named them as Annapurna canteens.

After Mangalagiri MLA Ramakrishna announced a budget canteen, the government decided to push the Anna Canteens file further and sent a group of municipal commissioners to Chennai and Hyderabad to know the modalities and maintenance details of the budget canteens. The commissioners submitted the report to the chief minister with their suggestions and recommendations.

The team of municipal commissioners learned that about three lakh people are having lunch at 407 Amma Canteens in Chennai. The canteens are offering various varieties of rice at lunch for Rs. 5 per plate and 3 idlis with chutney and sambar for Rs. 5 as tiffin.

In Hyderabad, the Annapurna Canteens are offering rice with pickle, curry, and sambar for Rs. 5 and are supplying them to around 70000 people daily. In Chennai, the local women self-help groups are cooking and supplying the food at the individual canteens, while Akshayapatra is supplying the food to the canteens from a centralised kitchen.

The municipal commissioners suggested one Anna Canteen each per every 50000 population in the municipalities but the chief minister is interested in setting up one for every 35000 people in the area. The Akashyapatra Foundation is spending about Rs. 23 per plate, while the GHMC is bearing Rs. 18 as subsidy. The Chennai Corporation is spending about Rs. 128 crore as subsidy but is requesting the state to share the burden.

The Akshayapatra Foundation has shown interest in maintaining the Anna Canteens in Andhra Pradesh. Sankranti Venkata Krishna, commissioner of Ongole Municipal Corporation said, “The chief minister wants that hygienic and nutritious food should be supplied through the Anna Canteens.
