Visakhapatnam: Well-known voluntary organisations teamed up to distribute notebooks free to the students of government and municipal schools in the district who otherwise find it expensive to buy from the shops.
The NGOs collecting used notebooks were sending them for recycling to a mill in Bengaluru which was supplying them notebooks of different sizes. They collected 18 tonnes of used books so far and began distributing them in the city form Tuesday. At a formal function, 2,500 notebooks were distributed to students of GVMC School located at Kancharapalem area of the city.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which is providing free mid-day meals to over 25,000 students in Visakhapatnam district, has identified notebooks problem among the students of government and municipal schools.
“There are many students in the government schools of Visakhapatnam who are not able to purchase notebooks from the shops due to poverty,” said a volunteer of Akshaya Patra.
Volunteers of the Vedic Science Club, Andhra University in association with the NSS students of GITAM University, started the project R3 – ‘Reduce, recycle, reuse’. Together they collected 18 tonnes of used notebooks and textbooks from the schools, colleges and corporate offices in the city and sent them for recycling. In the first phase, they prepared 10,000 note books for distributing them in the government schools of Visakhapatnam free of cost.
Vedic Science Club and NSS wing of GITAM University have tied up with JJ Foundation and Rotract Club of Gitam University. This is a unique project which involves three basic stages and activities.
``Our target is to distribute notebooks to 25, 000 children who are currently getting the benefits of the Akshaya Patra mid-day meal program “said Ambarisha Dasa Swamiji of Akshaya Patra Foundation.
Dr UV Adinarayana, Assistant Principal of GITAM Institute of Management and deputy educational officer of GVMC Usharani appreciated the efforts of these voluntary organizations which teamed up with Akshaya Foundation.
