Visakhapatnam: Many women activists of various organisations staged a dharna in front of a hotel in the city on Sunday demanding that Miss Vizag beauty pageant be cancelled.
A group of the event management comprising Creative Plus Entertainment Network, Rays Entertainment and Dreams Events made arrangements for Miss Vizag beauty pageant auditions at a hotel on Sunday.
But the organisers temporarily cancelled the auditions and said that the new date and time for auditions would be informed later following the protests against the contest Women activists opposing the contest gathered in front of the hotel and raised slogans against the government. They demanded that the government drop such contests which are insulting the women.
On receiving information, police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitators but in vain. Finally, the police arrested the agitators and shifted them to various police stations. A scuffle ensued between the police and women activists while they were being taken into custody.
When a group of women police trying to shift the agitators, one of the activists who prevented the police maximum level lost her consciousness. However, the other activists gave first aid and the police also waited till she recovered. After she recovered, the police picked her and shifted to police station.
Various women organisation leaders, including Prabhavathi, Madhavi, Lakshmi, Vimala and Eeswaramma, speaking to the media said that it is unfortunate that Ganta Srinivasa Rao being the HRD Minister supporting the event. The leaders pointed out that because of such events, the crime against women is increasing.
In the name of beach festival and tourism promotion, the government tried to organise a bikini festival. But with the strong opposition of the women organisations, the government withdrew its plans.
The Miss Vizag beauty contest organisers should announce the cancelation of the event and apologise to women. They will continue their agitation till the cancellation of the event, Vimala and Eeswaramma warned. They also warned that they will stage a dharna in front of HRD Minister’s house, if the organisers did not rollback the decision.
