Srikakulam: Famous Buddhist spot in the district, Salihundam situated on the banks of River Vamsadhara in Gara mandal would get a facelift soon with the Central government aid. The Buddhist spot was flourished in second century consequentially it has been neglected.

Now, the Central government as part of development of Buddhist corridors in the state has decided to providing facilities at Buddhist spots in Salihundam in Srikakulam, Thotlakonda, Bavikonda, Bojjannakonda in Visakhapatnam, Amaravati and Anupu in Gunturu districts; they have been included under Swadesi Darsan scheme.

The state government is planning to develop all these spots into Buddhist Corridor. Under the scheme, Salihundam gets Rs 2.27 crorefunds for providing lodging facility, parking, modern lighting to cover entire spot, construction of arch, CCTV cameras, internet and WiFi facility.

In addition to it, an Information Centre would be established here to provide details and history of the spot to tourists. All these development works would be finished under the supervision of state tourism development agency.

Salihundam Buddhist spot belongs to Satavahana dynasty. Bricks used for the construction of ‘Aaramam’, ‘Stupam’ were peculiar which are having 60 cm length and 30 cm width. The Buddha idol here was made with single stone which shows ability of the sculptures in those days.

The Buddhist spot came to light in 1919. “Online tenders were cleared for Rs 2.27 crore worth works and would be executed by middle of December”, district tourism promotion officer N Narayana Rao told The Hans India.
