Tirupati: Medical Council of India (MCI) president Dr Jayshree P Mehta inaugurated the new PG hostel building and high dose radionuclide therapy facility of Nuclear Medicine department at SVIMS on Saturday.

Addressing the students on the occasion, Dr Mehta advised them to work hard and achieve excellence in their respective fields and that would be the greatest reward that students can pay for their institute. She appreciated the institute for bringing such an advanced medical facility to hospital and giving treatment to the poor at a relatively low-cost.

SVIMS Director-cum-Vice Chancellor Dr TS Ravi Kumar said that in addition to building the hostel it is also important to provide livable happy conditions to students during their stay in the campus. The three-storied hostel building was built at a cost of Rs 7 crore and it can accommodate 178 students in 89 rooms with attached bathrooms. It has a seating capacity of 115 students in the dining hall and having recreation, reading and in door hall.

The high dose radio nuclide therapy ward is established to treat patients suffering from thyroid cancer and other cancers using different radio isotopes. This facility is first of its kind among the public sector organisations of AP and is biggest in South India, said Dr Ranadheer of Nuclear Medicine department. The facility was established at a cost of Rs 1.50 crores It has a total of 8 halls, 6 toilets and 2 delay decay tanks. The TTD has provided financial assistance both for the PG hostel and the high dose radio nuclide therapy ward.
