Kakinada: The mango crop has shown a sharp decline during this year when compared to last year in 2017 in East Godavari district. The total crop yield during the present season is expected to touch 50,000 metric tonnes only, whereas during the previous year, it crossed 1. 90 lakh metric tonnes.

The mango crop in East Godavari spread over in Tuni, Kotananduru, Tondangi, Rowtulapudi, Sankavaram, Prathipadu, Jaggampeta, upland mandals, Gokavaram, Rampachodavaram, Addateegala Agency mandals and Rajanagaram and Korukonda in plain areas in the district in 41,250 acres.

The prime varieties of mangoes from this vast area are Suvarnarekha, Rasalu, Banginapalli and Totapuri. According to reports, the main reason for decline in crop yield is the fluctuations in the day and night temperatures during the crucial flowering period for two months from December 2017 to January 2018.

According to sources in the agriculture department, the rise in both day and night temperatures and the fog factor is the cause for the drastic fall in production of mangoes.

According to assistant director of horticulture K Gopi Kumar, with sharp fluctuations in weather conditions from December to March, which may continue till the third week of June, the yield of mango crop may be around 50,000 metric tonnes.

Out of this total, 25,000 to 30,000 metric tonnes would go to sale of raw mangoes for pickles and allied activity, and expected to leave the remaining mango yield for consumption in the form of fruits, the AD pointed out.
