Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has decided to repair 40 traffic signals in the city on a war-footing basis to regulate the traffic. Commuters and traffic police are facing many problems due to defunct traffic signals in many parts of the city.

In the recently held meeting with the corporation officials at the council meeting hall, the traffic police asked the corporation to immediately take up the repairs.

Traffic increased in the city manifold after it became the capital of the state four years ago. Nearly, 40 traffic signals are not working properly in the city against 120 traffic signals installed by the corporation. Consequently, commuters are suffering.

Besides, the traffic police are also unable to regulate the traffic. In the absence of both traffic signals and traffic police, accidents are taking place on the main roads. Traffic signals are not functioning for a long time at Police Control Room, Alankar Centre, Apsara Theatre Junction, Chitti Nagar Junction, Daba Kotlu Centre at Ajit Singh Nagar and one or two places on BRTS Road.

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation convened a meeting with the traffic police on April 23 and discussed the ways and means to resolve the traffic problem in the city.

One of the important suggestions made by Joint Commissioner of Police Kanti Rana Tata was to immediately restore 40 traffic signals in the city to regulate the traffic.

Keeping in view of the urgency, Municipal Commissioner J Nivas recently instructed the officials to immediately take up the repairs to 40 traffic signals on a war-footing basis to regulate the traffic. The Commissioner told The Hans India that the civic body will spend Rs 3 crore to repair the traffic signals.
