Mob attacked the police station demanding that the police hand over the accused in the attempt to rape on a minor girl belonging minority community in the Old City.

They booked cases under the Sections 324,341,353,332,327 and 120 D of on Wednesday. It may be recalled that a mob gathered and tried to barge into the police station. When the police prevented the mob, they pelted stones at the police station. The police resorted to lathi-charge to disburse the violent mob.

As many as 22 police personnel sustained injuries. In addition, a transformer and 22 two-wheelers were also reduced to ashes. Tension prevailed till the early hours of Wednesday.

Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order ) Gupta rushed to the spot and reviewed the situation. Meanwhile, the police department is examining the video tapes sent by the drone cameras and video footage recorded in the CCTV cameras to identify the accused in the violence that was broke out in the backdrop of attempt to rape a minor girl in the Old City.

The top police officers wonder as to how such a huge mob could gather within a short time at the police station at that unearthly hours. They suspect involvement of anti-social elements in the accidents that resulted in damaging the government property and injury to the police personnel.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 continued in the Old Guntur and police set up pickets. Additional Police Forces have been deployed. Guntur Urban SP Ch Vijaya Rao conducted a meeting with the minority leaders at the SP office conference hall and asked them to step up vigilance regarding movement of the strangers and suspects.

He sought their cooperation and to create peace in the backdrop of beginning of Ramzan. He assured them that stern action would be taken against the accused in the attempt to rape case. He pacified the minority leaders.

Later, speaking to The Hans India, the SP made it clear that there was no relation with the burning of transformer and two-wheelers with the violence sparked off in the backdrop of attempt to rape on the minor girl. He said that electrical transformer was gutted due to short circuit.

TDP district general secretary Lal Vazeer alleged that the YSRCP leaders are behind the violence at the Old Guntur Police Station and that is why a large number of people gathered at the police station within a short time.

He questioned as to how over one thousand people gathered at the police station within short time. He said that the police correctly reacted and brought the situation under control.

Meanwhile, AP Mahila Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari consoled the victim at the GGH on Wednesday. According to police, the victim is residing at Rajiv Gruhakala Plots in the Old Guntur Police Station limits.

The accused Raghuram Singh, who was working in a printing press, developed contact with the minor girl and attempted to rape her. When the minor girl informed the issue to her parents, they vented ire at Raghu Ram Singh and lodged a complaint with the Old Guntur Police Station.

Surprisingly, the violence suddenly started. The police shifted the victim to the GGH for conducting the medical examination.
