Vijayawada: Such was the personality of Mahatma Gandhi, he could unite all sections of people irrespective of their religion, caste, creed during the freedom struggle, said KPC Gandhi, chairman of Andhra Pradesh unit of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi while addressing the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, jointly organised by AP Gandhi Smarak Nidhi and Vasavya Mahila Mandali here on Tuesday.

KPC Gandhi, who is also head of Truth Labs, said the religion of Gandhiji was truth and his weapon was non-violence. “Throughout his life Gandhiji preached and practiced treating everyone equally with respect,” he said. Veteran journalist Turlapati Kutumba Rao recalled that how he met Gandhiji at the age of 14 when the latter stopped at Vijayawada railway station during his journey to the erstwhile Madras.

Former mayor of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Dr Jandhyala Sankar recalled that Gandhiji and atheist leader Gora, admired each other.
Dr B Gangaiah, CEO of Smart Andhra Pradesh Foundation, also spoke. Centenarian Ravuri Arjuna Rao and his wife Manorama both of whom were closely associated with Gandhiji attended the celebrations.

The children, who attended the meeting, raised several questions regarding the life of Gandhiji and the couple answered them patiently. Earlier, Gangadhar and his team presented Burra Katha on Gandhiji and singer Mallik sang a song on Gandhiji written by Ravi. G Rashmi, secretary of Vasavya Mahila Mandali, noted physician Dr G Samaram, Nau Gora, and others spoke.
