Mahindra has announced that it will launch a new LCV on April 27. The vehicle will be called as Mahindra Big Bolero Pik-Up but the company hasn’t divulged any other details.

We suspect the new LCV model to have a longer loading bay and possibly higher payload capacity than the current pik-up which is designed to carry 1,250 kg. We also expect the new variant to ditch the obsolete dashboard design in favor of the current Bolero passenger variant’s unit.

The current Bolero Pik-Up is powered by the older 2.5-litre DI diesel engine which develops 63 PS and 195 Nm of torque. It remains to be seen whether the Big Bolero Pik-Up will continue with the same engine or upgrade to the CRDI version (the outputs are more or less identical).

The strong sales performance of the Bolero Pik-Up has enabled Mahindra to command a good market share in the 0.5-3.5 tonne GVW category. In the first 6 months of last fiscal (April to September 2015), the automaker had a market share of over 50% in this segment, thereby edging past Tata Motors.

Mahindra also launched Supro, Jeeto, Imperio (revamped Genio) in regular intervals in a bid to hold its fort in the LCV segment. The Big Bolero Pik-Up would also help the company consolidate its market share.
