‘Jack Ryan : Shadow Recruit’ is the fourth in the line of Jack Ryan stories by Tom Clancy, with Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Afleck playing the lead roles earlier. But Chris Pine as the latest lead is in no way found wanting.

Jack Ryan (Pine) works as junior analyst for the CIA’s Directorate of Intelligence. He inadvertently comes across news of an imminent terrorist attack. He is then promoted to field agent and sent to Moscow to deal confront Viktor Cherevin (Kenneth Branagh), an enigmatic businessman who plans to cripple the world’s economy. Recruiting and guiding Jack is CIA senior William Harper (Kevin Costner) who also sets out for Moscow.

Jack is in love with Kathy (Kiera Knightly), a doctor who helped heal his leg during an accident sustained when on duty in Afghanistan. He somehow gets involved in the taut action ably handled by director Branagh. Action is the USP of the film even if it is a tad jingoistic.

Chris Pine shows enough promise for the future and Kevin Costner is restrained. Kiera Knightly is as usual as sensitive as ever and Branagh turns in an impressive cameo as Russian in this racy entertainer that’s good while it lasts...
