What makes Aamir Khan so famous? Aamir Khan isn’t a mere Bollywood actor. Quite like Rancho in the movie ‘3 Idiots’, he was never afraid to voice his opinion against injustice or speak up for the causes he believed in – irrespective of the consequences or the feathers he ruffled and the threats to his life.

He did step on toes with his television debut ‘Satyamev Jayate’. For once, a show didn’t wish to entertain but educate. The serial did run shivers down the spine of many agencies, professionals and individuals. And educate it did – raising awareness about issues like medical malpractice, gender discrimination, dowry deaths, malnutrition, disability, pesticides and many others. But that’s what Aamir Khan does – in movies and real life – he expands your horizon and opens your eyes, the world beyond the mundane. We love him for what he’s done for these issues.

What makes this actor so famous? Is it the fact that he is the Bollywood actor Aamir Khan or the causes he raised his voice for? The presentation of the show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ was a trifle off beat. The true life stories were very well presented with no ‘alterations’ for the audience.
Many of us might think that Aamir’s altruism started with ‘Satyamev Jayate’ but he has been fighting for social causes long before the show. He has been a constant voice against malnutrition for a long time and in 2011, was made an official UNICEF ambassador against it.
We are a traditional, chauvinist, parochial and misogynist society which has no respect for the girl child and Satyamev Jayate’s first episode had no qualms showing us the ugly truth. The show focussed on the disgusting practice of female foeticide and how rampant it is all over India. There was an awakening a ‘hulchul’ on this issue and government woke up to the call of Aamir’s noise on this issue.
Amir discussed the country’s woeful healthcare scenario and also touched upon the practice of medical malpractice. Of course our doctors were miffed and demanded an apology which the actor refused to give. But many doctors did think of the Hippocratic oath and their commitment to society after this issue.
After fighting for the girl child on the show, Aamir joined hands with an NGO to build a shelter for women in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. The facility provides short-term shelter, schooling, medical facilities and also provides abandoned girls a home. Though the actor has never gone on record to say how much he donated to the facilities, sources say that he had given Rs 3 crore to help build those facilities.
The last issue was on the criminal charges against politicians and the right to vote and elect a committed leader for the city, state and country. It could have been a coincidence that the episode was aired before elections but it was a meaningful cause.
Amir, by raising awareness about social evils prevalent in the Indian society through his reality show ‘Satyamev Jayate’, faced several life threats. From uncovering the malpractices of doctors, unethical police officers, and dowry system to talking about against female foeticide, the actor has done it all. While some have appreciated his efforts, he has on the other hand faced the wrath of the orthodox and the wrongdoers.
“After the first season of Satyamev Jayate, Aamir Khan received a few threats. He then decided to purchase this expensive bombproof car. There are a lot of people out there, who own bulletproof cars, but his bombproof car is a customised model and it is specially made for VVIPs," informed a source at a Mercedes show room. After Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Mukesh Ambani, Aamir is the third to own a bullet proof Merc of this kind.
Can one actor’s voice bring in change to these social evils? We at Hans believe we can and are sure more actors of Bollywood will appear for such social causes and so will leaders and readers.
