Crime against working women up; here's why, crime against women, Nirbhaya Act. Even after the implementation of specified acts like Nirbhaya Act, our societies continue to experience crime against women in India rather they are at a rise.
If we clearly examine the statistics issued by National Crime Records Bureau for the crime against women in general, and working women in particular, in 2013 alone there is a five fold increase in the crime against women. The national capital emerged as the capital of crimes against women without facing any spurt of competition from any other city in such dreadful activities. Delhi recorded an average of 5 rapes, 10 kidnappings, 2 eve teasings and 10 molestations in any given day, on an average in 2013.
Even after the implementation of specified acts like Nirbhaya Act, our societies continue to experience crime against women in India rather they are at a rise. Crime against women like rapes, stalking and voyeurism are at their peak in the contemporary Indian society.
It is worth recollecting the heinous incident that took place in Delhi on December 16, 2012. A paramedic student aged about 23 years was brutally assaulted and gang-rapped, shading a spotlight on crimes against women in the country.
Following this incident, for the first time, there was a furious outrage, emotional outburst as the general public, both men and women demanded safety and protection of women in the country. As a result of the strong flak received from the people, the union government has to come down for the formulation of a specific act, Nirbhaya.
Crime Vs Working Women
From the year 2010, the crimes have risen by 7.1%. According to the statistics of the National Crime Record Bureau, as many as 24,206 cases of rapes in 2011 alone have been recorded. The NCRB indicated that more than half of the victims of such rape incidences appeared to fall between 18-30 years of age.
If we go deep into the analysis, most of the crimes that took place against women are on working women.
Why working women are targeted for crime?
Working women in general have a freedom of living. They stay away from their homes and parents. They have more freedom as compared to other women. The vested freedom in the cultural transformation process makes the working women keep their heritage and culture away. It not only causes damage to the entire working women kind, but also the societies. Change is inevitable; at the same time such a change should not neglect the moral values imposed on people in any given society.
From the other end, masculinity provides an ideological basis for impunity to be legalized and practiced. That way, crimes against working women have to be much easier as working women become easy targets for men.
While reforms and affirmative action to deal with violence against women may be a feasible solution, these crimes are strongly associated with traditions of patriarchy and repressive attitude that prevail across the masses.
What to do?
There is a need to address this issue from grassroots level. There is no doubt that the concerned authorities and governments have been addressing the very issue at appropriate level. Nevertheless, they are confined only to lifeless records and books. It’s not only the government that has to work alone towards this burning issue, but also each and every citizen of this nation. They should come forward, become responsible and contribute their best. NGOs and Media organizations should become responsible in bringing awareness among the masses. Such efforts have a great impact, undoubtedly.
The NGOs who have been working hard to address the problem of crime against women in India, and make women rise amid such chaotic conditions are much appreciated. As a result of the massive protest that followed the brutal assault of the paramedical student in Delhi, the agitation by the crowd sparked public debates in the media about how both the government and policymakers should find ways of stopping such crimes.
The societal changes in India are being engineered by the elite. However, such changes just spark for sometime and within a short span, the situation gets reverted back. Like polio has been eradicated form India, crime against women and otherwise should be exterminated from the country.
I would like to recite the quote of Mahatma Gandhiji: “After attaining Swaraj, now it’s time to attain Suraj”. Give it a thought…and exterminate crime in India…..!!
