Machilipatnam: A mother and her daughter were injured in an acid attack on them by their tenant in the town on Friday night. Police arrested the accused and shifted the injured to the Government General Hospital in Vijayawada.

According to the police, Shaik Subhani deserted his wife and two children two years ago. He took a house for rent and had been living there since then. He set his eyes on the house owner’s daughter and asked her to marry him. He told the girl and her parents that he had left his wife as she was sick and needed a healthy wife. He wanted the girl to marry him and even threatened her and her parents of resorting to suicide if they refused.

He also reportedly threatened the parents of dire consequences if they revealed it to anyone or even thought of marrying their daughter to others.

The worried parents did not reveal it to anyone out of fear. On Friday morning, the family went to the Masjid at Kakani in Guntur district for prayers and returned in the night. Suspecting that the parents were trying to get her married, Subhani picked up an argument with the girl and her parents in the house. While the parents tried to argue with him, he pulled out an acid bottle from his pocket and threw the liquid on the girl. Shocked at this, the girl’s mother rushed to her rescue and suffered acid marks. Their screams attracted the neighbours’ attention, who alerted the police. The police rushed to the spot took Subhani into custody and shifted the injured mother and girl to the local hospital for first aid. They were later shifted to the government general hospital in Vijayawada.

The police registered a case against Subhani. They also collected the evidence from the house and recorded the statements of both the mother and the girl besides the neighbours.
