Anantapur: Dacoits snatched gold ornaments weighing 15 tolas from women passengers of Tirupati-Secunderabad Padmavathi weekly Express in the small hours of Friday near Pothakotha Cheruvu village in Guntakal Division of the South Central Railway.

Anantapur: Two More Train Robberies

The incident occurred at around 1 am as the train slowed down, after leaving Pathakotha Cheruvu railway station. The offenders pulled the chain of coaches to stop the train. About 25 snatched gold jewels from several women belonging to Secunderabad sitting near windows in coaches S6, S7, S8 and S9, after threatening them with knives. A woman sustained neck injury. They escaped after the victims shouted loudly in the absence of police security.

The victims lodged complaints to the Government Railway Police after reaching Secunderabad at 7.30 am. Among them was Bhavani of Uppal. She said the dacoits had snatched her ‘mangalasutram’ weighing three tolas while she was asleep. She expressed anger at the railway officials for their negligent attitude which was resulting in daily occurrence of train robberies.

The passengers blasted the railway for failing to reach the spot although it was only six km from Guntakal. They squatted on Guntakal platform No 4 to register their protest. Officials persuaded them to give up their demonstration. They deployed dog squad.

The officials claimed that shortage of staff was one of the reasons for not paying attention to the problems of passengers. The Guntakal Government Railway Police took up investigation. This is the third train robbery to occur within two days. On Thursday passengers of the Hyderabad-bound Chennai Express were robbed of their gold jewellery and cash in Piduguralla station in Guntur district. A passenger, Bharati belonging to the Old City, of the Chennai Express was relieved of her two tolas of gold ornaments as the train left Ponnur station in the small hours of Friday. She lodged a complaint to GRP in Secunderabad in the morning.
