Hyderabad: In a freak mishap, a 55-year-old security guard died after reportedly being electrocuted when he tried to foil a robbery bid at a shop at Panama Godowns on Sahara Estates Road under Vanasthalipuram police station limits in the wee hours of Tuesday.

According to sub-inspector, S Devender, the guard, Bahadur Bhandari, a resident of Hayathnagar, was posted at Diamond Wines in Panama Godowns a couple of months ago. According to police, two men barged into the shop around 4 am and tried to break open the door. They scaled the wall and tried to gain entry from the roof of the building.

Bhandari, who was on guard outside, rushed to the top floor and there was a scuffle between them, following which Bhandari came into contact with a high-tension wire and suffered a massive shock and died on the spot, the sub-inspector said.

After their robbery bid foiled in the first attempt at Diamond Wines, the robbers took a second attempt and struck at Meenakshi Wines in the same building and decamped with a cash of Rs 20,000 and imported liquor bottles.

Police team examined the CCTV footages which showed the suspects walking in the building and strolling out of it with cash and imported liquor bottles. Based on a complaint by the owner, a case has been registered. A manhunt had been launched to nab the culprits, the cops said.

Meanwhile the body of the guard has been shifted to Osmania Hospital for post mortem. Police registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC.
