Hyderabad: The Ramgopalpet police on Sunday took 72 youngsters, mostly college students, into custody for rash driving and performing bike stunts at Necklace Road. The police also seized 72 bikes from their possession.

As complaints poured in from morning walkers and locals, the Central Zone Police took a special drive as part of their effort to reduce deaths while performing such dangerous acts by bikers and to counsel them.

The bikers were riding dangerously and doing stunts early morning on Necklace Road stretch, Additional DCP (Central) M Ram Mohan Rao said.

“They were all underage riders. The detained bikers are between 15 and 19 years old and most of them do not possess driving license,” said the officer.

A case under Section 279 of the IPC for rash and negligent driving has been registered by the Ramgopalpet police.

The races happen mainly during weekends. The racers indulge in various styles like wheeling and zigzag riding. They often placed bets on the outcome of the races, Rao said adding that in the past similar cases had been booked and students along with their parents were counselled. The police called parents of the bikers and warned them not to allow their sons to perform such dangerous stunts.
