Hyderabad: A 24-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide due to harassment by her husband for additional dowry late on Thursday night. According to Chaitanyapuri police, the deceased, A Lalitha, committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan at her Maruthi Nagar residence in Kothapet area on Thursday night.

Preliminary investigation by the police revealed that Lalitha, a native of Nalgonda, was married to one Suman in February last year. Fifteen sovereigns of gold, 150 square yards plot and Rs 5 lakh were paid at the time of marriage. However, four months into the marriage, Suman and his relatives started harassing Lalitha for additional dowry.

On January 24, Lalitha lodged a complaint with the Saroornagar Women's Police Station and the couple was counselled the next day. However, on Thursday night, Suman called Lalitha’s father and informed him that his daughter had committed suicide. Based on a complaint lodged by Lalitha's father, Chaitanyapuri police registered a case under Sections 304 B, 498 A and other relevant sections of the IPC and took up the investigation.
