Vijayawada: The city crime police arrested a habitual temple thief, Prakash Kumar Sahu (38), on Sunday and recovered stolen property worth Rs 25 lakh and Rs 1.19 lakh cash from his possession. Producing the accused before the media, city police commissioner A B Venkateswara Rao said Sahu earned notoriety by committing a burglary in Kanaka Durga temple atop Indrakeeladri in 1998.

“He was sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment for stealing the crown of Goddess Kanaka Durga. After his release from jail, he resumed thefts. His modus operandi is to target temples and steal silverware and jewellery. He would dispose of the stolen silverware in bulk as he has many friends who are into silver business.

Sahu was an accused in a theft that took place in Sai Baba temple at Prasadampadu in the city recently. He settled in Bhubaneswar, wanted to lead a normal life by doing mining business in Chhattisgarh. In the meantime, he was apprehended,” the commissioner said. He added that 47 cases were registered against Sahu in police stations in Odisha, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
