Even as fire-fighters struggled to douse the blaze, smoke engulfed the building making it difficult to go inside. Inflammable material like cigarettes, matchboxes, betel nuts and other articles which were stocked in the shop were reduced to ashes. It took nearly seven hours to douse the flames, according to Gowliguda fire office, J Rajkumar.

Short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire in the shop. "Strict instructions were given to initiate safety measures in market areas, but till date, nothing has been taken care of,” the fire officer said. The full strength of the water hoses could not be utilized due to crammed area, he added. The fire resulted in a massive traffic jam at Abids and Afzalgung areas.
