Hyderabad: As many as 22 women drivers were caught by the City Traffic Police along with 11,738 men while driving in an inebriated state in Hyderabad since January 2015, said Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Jitender.

Breaking down the cases, Jitender on Friday said that as many as 8,551 people were caught driving two-wheelers in an inebriated state,

2,251 people including 22 women were caught driving four-wheelers, 451 were caught driving autos and 507 others were driving heavy vehicles in a drunken state in this year.

So far, 1,748 of them were imprisoned by the courts for violating the Motor Vehicles Act and a fine of over Rs 1.26 crore has been imposed on the motorists.

“The main aim of conducting enforcement drives on drunken driving and counseling the accused is to impart traffic rules to them.

It is a preventive measure before any damage could occur to commuters as well as pedestrians,” Jitender said.
