Lepakshi notebooks which are in demand among the middle and lower class families and poor, now to cost 33 per cent more

Hyderabad: Lepakshi notebooks that have been on the annual budget of every middle and lower middle class family would no longer figure in the list. Thanks to increase in the price by 33 per cent by the government. With the increase in the price, parents and students are now forced to shell out more towards the books.

A 192-page long notebook which cost Rs 30 last year will now cost anywhere between Rs 40 and 45 and an 80-page long notebook would cost around Rs 30. As the raw material cost increased manifold, the government had to increase the prices of the notebooks this year. In comparison with other notebooks available in the market, Lepakshi books are inexpensive, a government official cited. The bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh has cast a shadow on the production of the books. Though raw material is in plentiful, the converters (workers involved in the production) who are solely responsible for the production aren’t segregated and allotted to the respective states. “Temporarily the work has been suspended due to the ongoing bifurcation process and converters are still not allotted completely,” said an official of Andhra Pradesh Trade and Promotion Corporation (APTPC).

Before the beginning of the academic year, the Andhra Pradesh Handicrafts Development Corporation limited makes notebooks available in the market, but this year with the bifurcation process going on; the notebooks are hardly seen in the market. “This year we are not selling the books and we didn’t receive any consignment from the department due to the bifurcation of the state. Even during the last academic year, there wasn’t enough response from the customers and this year it’s nil. Moreover, the schools are directly giving their consignment to the department and purchasing them,” said Venkateswar, an official at Lepakshi Emporium.

The officials have said that the profit may dip this year due to the bifurcation. “This year we asked distributors to give us the consignment and accordingly we would supply. Every year there is gradual increase in the product and also profits, but due to bifurcation it may come down,” said M R Bhogibhushanam, General Manager APTPC.
