New Delhi: Several higher educational institutions in India produce quality research, but they need to improve their "perception index" if they are to secure better standing in global rankings, the govt said.

“Since many of these ranking systems attach considerable importance to perception, hence despite faring well in research, many institutions from India have not secured ranks as per their performance," opinedIrani.

The HRD minister said that while focusing on their strengths, these institutions need to work on improving their "perception index" if they have to better their global rankings.

She, however, added that the rankings of Indian institutes are steadily improving. IISc, Bangalore, and IIT-Delhi have been placed at No.147 and No.179, respectively, in QS World University Rankings for 2015-16, Irani added.
