The Paryatak Bhavan of the AP Tourism Department Corporation (APTDC), owes the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) an annual property tax of Rs 98 lakh. With the inclusion of arrears, the tax rounds up to an amount of Rs 1.2 crore. Somesh Kumar, Commissioner, GHMC, said that a team of tax collectors were constantly monitoring the development with the Paryatak Bhavan. When there was a no-show from the APTDC towards the payment of their taxes, the officials cracked down on the Paryatak Bhavan. It seized cash and movable assets from buildings such as 3 Innova cars, 6 computer systems, 1 sofa-set, 2 printers and 2 scanners. On Tuesday, the Paryatak Bhavan officials met Somesh Kumar and gave him a cheque of Rs 20 lakh leaving the APTDC with an debt of Rs 1 crore, with the GHMC.

A highly placed source at the GHMC said that the APTDC officials requested for time till March 31 to pay the arrears and that they would make the payment for the pending amount in two installments.
Till date, the GHMC had collected property tax to the tune of Rs 538.67 crore which in comparison to last year, is an excess of Rs 70 crore. The civic chief said that if the collection drive moves at the same pace, the civic body would be able to achieve its target of collecting Rs 1,000 crore, this financial year.
The GHMC has also set its hopes high and plans on achieving higher than the set target that was set last year. This year they plan on collecting Rs 1,250 crore, as a secondary target.
Somaraju, Deputy Commissioner, central zone, said, “On Tuesday, we also conducted a raid at the New Science College in Ameerpet and eight other buildings. They owed property tax ranging between Rs 2 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. We have given specific target to the bill collectors to ensure that they execute the warrants in time.”
