Until now all the zoo parks and deer parks were under the respective Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) but soon would be brought under a single management- Zoos & Parks Authority of Telangana (ZAPAT). Nehru Zoological Park

P Mallikarjuna Rao, in-charge director of state zoos, says, “By the end of October all the zoos, deep parks and national parks would come under a single umbrella. It would help in better coordination and there would be ample chance for flexibility and development. It would help in exchange of animals, developmental activities and proper monitoring.”

The revenue generated from all the parks, zoos and national parks would go to ZAPAT. As of now, the generated revenue is given to the state government. ZAPAT would be an autonomous body and would be headed by the Minister of Environment and Forests (MoEF) who would be the chairman. The director of zoos and parks would be the member secretary. ZAPAT would be funded by the state as well as the central government.

Upgradation of mini-zoos

Mini zoos would be upgraded to small zoos under ZAPAT. In its agenda of upgrading zoos, the Warangal Mini Zoo has been upgraded as a small zoo. Until last year, the zoo used to get Rs 20 lakh budget but for the year 2014-15 it has been raised to Rs 1.5 crore.

In future the Karimnagar Park too would be upgraded. A senior official of Nehru Zoological Park (NZP) said that there would be heightened activity in zoos and parks with the coming of ZAPAT. The Karimnagar Deer Park, Pillamarri Deer Park, Kinnerasani Deer Park, Mrugavani National Park at Chilkur, National park at Vanasthalipuram and the Deer Park at Shameerpet would all get a face-lift.
