Water to Every Household: Krishna Phase IV Under Consideration. The population in the city has grown exponentially over the past decade and it is estimated that it will continue to grow in the new State, with the T-government’s interest in the ITIR (Information Technology Investment Region).

Water grid is a pet project of Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and the Water Board officials are racking their brains to make the CM’s dream come true. The officials have put forward proposals for works worth Rs 18, 643 crore related to the project. Krishna phase IV and additional supply of water from Jurala are the key projects proposed

The population in the city has grown exponentially over the past decade and it is estimated that it will continue to grow in the new State, with the T-government’s interest in the ITIR (Information Technology Investment Region). Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao came up with an idea of setting up water grids throughout the State in a bid to provide safe and potable drinking water. When it comes to the city, the government has set a target to supply 150 litres of water every day to every family in the city and 90 to 120 litres to people on the outskirts.

Going by these figures, the Water Board officials have estimated that 491 million gallons are required everyday to cater to the needs of 92 lakh people (2014 estimate) in the city. Currently, Hyderabad is receiving 340 million gallons per day (MGD) and is short by 151 MGD to meet the new standards. The officials, considering the facts like increase in population, have proposed Krishna phase IV along with transfer of 90 MGD water from Jurala Project.

In a recent meeting with ministers and other senior officials, Water Board officials have informed that water supply from Himayat and Osman Sagar can be multiplied by opting for gravity-based supply. They have also proposed construction of an Outer Ring Main along the circumference of the city for the supply of water from Godavari, Krishna and Jurala.

Funds a big dilemma

It has been widely reported that the Water Board is facing huge losses. The board earns Rs 93 crore per month in bills and other charges while it has to shell out Rs 95 crore every month in the form of loan repayments, electricity bills and salaries. The option that is left before the board is to approach agencies like Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (HUDCO) for funds. The board had already taken loans worth Rs 3,500 crore from HUDCO and it would be interesting to see whether HUDCO grants additional loans. However, the Water Board officers are confident that the government would pool in funds and might act as guarantor, if they are keen to go ahead with the proposed works.
