The All India Cow Beauty Contest for Murrah breed was held in Rajahmundry on Saturday. About 350 cows of 18 varieties and she buffaloes took part in the contest. The varities included Rathi from western Rajasthan, Vechur from Kerala, Khilari from Bijapur, Gir from Gujarat, Ponwar from Pilibhit in UP, Ongole cattle from Nellore, Kenkatha from the banks of Ken river in UP, Nagor from Rajasthan, Sahiwal from Punjab, Pakistan and Amrith Mahal from Hasan in Karnataka.

The cows were judged on qualities like type, skin, head, forehead, horns, hooves, muzzle, colour, face, tail and sheath.

Chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and ex-MLA Cherukuwada Sri Ranganatha Raju, who organised this contest said that its objective was to create awareness on protection of cows. He stressed on the need to preserve Ongole and Punganur varieties of cows in Andhra Pradesh. He recalled that 20 cows took part in the contest three years ago and the number has now increased to 350 this year. Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa and Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu attended the event.
