Telangana Horticulture department puts up barricade

A motley crowd wishing to visit the State Museum on International Museum Day organised woldwide on May 18 were in for a surprise. The car in which they were travelling was stopped by the guards. A barricade was placed just yards from the entrance to the museum. Raheem, a resident of Old City, who brought his family, said, “The very words Public Gardens means it is for the public. By stopping vehicles and placing a barricade it is inconvenient for people to visit the museum.”

An employee working at the museum said that even the staff was stopped and they had to keep their vehicles away from the museum. It is almost two months since the barricade was placed. A retired High Court judge who visits the Public Gardens for a walk in the evenings is said to have objected to vehicles parked close to the museum. Since then the Telangana Horticulture department put up a barricade.”

The barricade put up by the Telangana Horticulture deparment is causing inconvenience to visitors to the State Museum

A senior employee of the State Museum said, “Already there are few people visiting the museum. On an average just about 100 people visit the museum. By placing barricades even the few people who visit the museum will go back.” People who want to take their vehicles have to now go round about through Bal Bhavan and reach the State Museum.

Venkateshwar Rao, a retired bureaucrat, said, “Thankfully, the Public Gardens is one place which is clean and green, but if the departments do not work in coordination it will spell doom. What will people visiting our State take back? The best publicity is word of mouth. The barricade should be immediately removed and free passage should be allowed.”

The International Museum Day is celebrated on May 18, but the day passed off with a low-key affair with just a few posters of rock art kept at the State Museum on Monday. The Telangana State Archaeology and Museums department too did not organise any programme. Usually, the department organises lectures and seminars that are attended by experts every year.
