Metro Rail works at Marredpally and rains in the past few days has left residents of Gandhi Basthi behind St. Andrews Church in a lurch. The works had damaged underground drainage pipes which has inundated the colony. Streets and houses are submerged in water and dwellers are forced to sleep outside their houses.

Swathi, a resident of the basthi, laments, “We lodged a complaint to the Secunderabad Cantonment Board to fix the problem last week. However no one has paid heed to our pleas. We are literally sleeping on the street. This is the first time we are facing such an issue.”

Vexed by inaction by authorities, the residents staged a dharna outside SCB office on Tuesday. Sanitary official A Devender contacted the Metro Rail project officials to fix the problem. MLA G Sayanna and SCB vice president Sada Keshava Reddy promised to solve their issue. On Wednesday Devender informed that new drainage pipelines are being laid by the Hyderabad Metro Rail.

Civic works inspection at West Marredpally

As part of phase two of Swachh Telangana-Swachh Hyderabad programme, commercial taxes minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) MD NVS Reddy interacted with residents at West Marredpally on Wednesday.Responding to the complaint of residents that some private builder constructed a multi-storeyed building over a nala flowing through the cantonment area which is choking the main sewer line, NVS Reddy informed them that he would speak to Cantonment Board CEO to demolish the illegal structure.

Noticing overflowing sewer lines near Geetha Nursing Home, Srinivas Yadav instructed Water Board officials to immediately repair and remove the garbage dump over manholes blocking the sewer lines. The minister also advised GHMC zonal commissioner Harichandana to initiate action against nursing homes and hospitals which are not following scientific disposal of biomedical waste and which are dumping it in the garbage bins.
