Unresolved cases are aplenty in the country, and some seem nearly impossible to crack despite CBI investigations. While the recent Sheena Bora murder case is one such example of a case so extensively examined and reported about, the 2008 Aarushi Talwar murder remains a mystery etched in the minds of many.

A Manthan talk discussing the topic “Presumed Guilty: the Aarushi Talwar story” was held recently at Vidyaranya School. The speaker, Avirook Sen who is also the author of the book ‘Aarushi’ shared insights based on his personal investigations of the case.

Having personally attended courtroom proceedings to substantiate his book, Avirook Sen shared facts and evidence from the Aarushi Talwar case in his book. The double-murder mystery has caused many families to shudder, even as the dentist parents of the girl were accused and convicted of having murdered their own daughter due to various reasons – including an honour killing as a result of a love affair with servant Hemraj, whose body was also found the same day.

As a student of journalism himself, Sen spoke about the role of the media in sensationalising the story in a manner that pleases the public. At the core of the book is an uncovering of the country’s pathetic systems of functioning and amount of care taken.

But one may wonder why the author chose this specific case. He shares, “In my view, this case has many layers to it. It’s not just about who killed her. The story reveals to me how our criminal justice system and courtroom really functions.” And anybody could find themselves in this situation, he further adds.

At the talk, he spent time sharing his research. “All that I put into the book has proof – whether tape recording of an interview or on paper,” says Sen. He shares that in his opinion, the findings from the forensics lab and the courts are questionable as they seem to have a relationship with the CBI. The movie ‘Talvar’ is not based on the book by Sen, who is a Gurgaon-based independent journalist, he clarified.
