Dutch music legend Tiesto started his music career at a young age in 1994 and is on a roll since then. He performed at the 2004 Olympics’ opening ceremony at Athens, thus becoming the first DJ to play live on stage at the showpiece event.
Tiesto will visit India for a three-city tour with Sunburn Arena. He will perform on December 17 in Bengaluru at Supernova Arena and Convention; December 18 in New Delhi at Ambience and December 19 in Hyderabad at Gachibowli Stadium. In a tête-à-tête, the EDM maestro speaks about his stint in the genre and more.
Excerpts:
How did your stint with DJing start?
Since I was a kid, I always felt the need to share the music I love with as many people as possible, and DJing seemed like the perfect outlet.
Why did you choose EDM rather than mainstream music?
I was never attracted to the pop world, though I listen to it sometimes. But I’ve never thought, “Oh, I need to work with Ne-Yo now.” It’s never really been my thing.
Who is your favourite DJ among your contemporaries and why?
I guess that would be Martin Garrix. He’s extremely talented and has so many intangibles that make for an artiste with big time staying power.
What inspires you to create a track?
I can honestly say that the fans inspire me. There’s an unexplainable rush that comes when I’m in the middle of a set and the energy from the fans hits me. I also get really inspired through collaborations. I’ve learned so much from the emerging producers I’ve worked with, just as they’ve learned from me.
How much time does it take to mix a track?
It depends on elements, which are added to the track. Probably it can take 10 to 12 hrs or more to create an EDM track
Music aficionados say EDM is fading. What do you say?
Not at all. In fact, it’s still growing and expanding into other sub-genres. I think that conversation started a few years ago and here we are still going strong. I think it’s only natural for tastes to shift, and we’re definitely seeing that to a degree, but this industry is real and thriving.
According to you, what is the scene of EDM in India?
All of India has become a huge destination for dance music. It’s so exciting to see what’s happening in India. It’s always such a great affirmation to see the scene all around the world getting stronger and stronger. It shows how powerful this music is!
How has your journey been so far?
Once it hits this level of popularity, it’s like, where could this possibly go from here? I remember when I was 30; I said to myself that I would stop in the next five years. Now, I’m 46. I do think I will be done at one point, but I also think that as long as people like me, I can remain relevant, and the music is good, I will keep doing this. Once that’s over for me, then I think I will know when to stop. And then I will move on to something else: maybe fashion, maybe being a manager, maybe starting my own DJ agency.
Tell us about your experience in 'Tomorrowland'?
It’s a place of musical freedom; people can listen to whatever they want. It’s incredible and a big platform for upcoming talent.
What are your future projects?
I’ve got lot of records coming out in 2016. Some that are really underground, some that are a little more crossover (like Red Lights) and I can’t wait for my Indian fans to hear these new tracks. Make sure you pay attention if you come to one of the shows on this tour!
