An official team led by TS Health Minister Laxma Reddy visited Tamil Nadu recently. The team studied the public health delivery system in detail. Based on the report submitted by the team, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao instructed the officials to come out with a new health and medical system on par with Tamil Nadu.

The ideas picked up from Tamil Nadu include free high-end diagnosis facility, critical care, emergency services and complex surgeries for cancer, liver, lungs and heart patients provided in the teaching hospitals. The teaching hospitals would be promoted as centres for research in medical education.

An official of the State Health Department briefed The Hans India that proposals include inculcating service motive among doctors, monthly review of doctors’ performance, patients’ feedback, transparency in the purchase of medical equipment and establishment of modern hospitals.

A special course on moral values and service to the poor will be made part of medical education. “Doctors and administrative staff will be made accountable in discharging their duties,” an official said adding “at present there is lack of accountability in the government hospitals.”

Health Minister Laxma Reddy said that all the heads of the departments of state Health Directorate, Vaidya Vidhana Parishad and Directorate of Medical Education were preparing a detailed report on the steps to be taken up to strengthen the Health Department.
